Why Hand-Stretched Canvas Changes the Quality of an Oil Painting
Not all canvas surfaces are the same, and hand-stretched canvas remains a favorite choice for serious oil painters over pre-stretched factory versions. When canvas is stretched by hand, the artist controls tension carefully, pulling the woven fabric evenly across wooden stretchers to prevent sagging over decades. Loose canvas will crack oil paint layers as they dry, while properly tensioned canvas holds rigid as heavy oil media cures. Hand-stretched work also lets artists adjust the weave texture: coarse weave creates visible texture under thin glazes, while fine weave suits smooth portrait details. Artists can size and prime the canvas themselves, choosing primer formulas that match their painting style, rather than relying on generic factory gesso. This extra preparation takes time, but it improves the longevity of oil paintings significantly. For art buyers, hand-stretched oil art is a mark of careful craftsmanship, built to stay stable and beautiful for generations.
